Ek Balam is a name in Yucatan Mayan language, formed by the word "ek", which is how they called the black color and that also means "star"; and "Balam", which means "jaguar". It can then be translated as "black jaguar or star jaguar".
Ek Balam, holder of majestic buildings hidden between large trees, it is differen to all of the places in the Mayan area and it looks unlike any other aechaeological site.
It was a capital city with great material and artistic wealth. This is reflected in the many masks, friezes, stony statues, and beautifully carved monuments where you can appreciate the intricate detail of art and symbolism.
